Surge Suppression (TVSS/SPD)
Critical Power Group of Northern Virginia is a provider of Current Technology Surge Protection Devices (SPD) and Transient Voltage Surge Suppressors (TVSS). These products are listed to UL 1449 3rd Edition and prevent downtime and costly repairs by protecting against transient surges. Surges can occur from lightning, switching power supplies, electronic ballasts and variable frequency drives. Some surges can occur from multiple strikes so SPD’s are sized to protect during multiple surges. YouTube Videos about Surge Suppression are at the bottom of this page.
If Critical Power Group can fulfill your surge suppression needs, please fill in your contact information in the Request a Quote Section or Contact our Northern Virginia Headquarters at (703) 443-1717 and we will be happy to help you. Below you will find information on each surge suppression product we offer.

Surge Suppression
Powersmiths PRO Series Surge Protection Device (SPD)
|
The PRO Series Surge Protection Device (SPD) treats internally and externally generated transients while filtering electrical noise. It is compact and can be pre-wired into a Powersmiths transformer or installed into the building’s distribution panels.
Its compact dimensions allow Pro Series to be mounted close to the bus or the equipment being protected, Powersmiths provides a 10 year full product replacement warranty. A 25 year pro-rated warranty is also available when Powersmiths Cyberhawk MPC is installed at the building entrance. |
Joslyn TransEnd Surge Suppression Device SPD
|
The Josyln TransEnd product protects facilities and equipment against lightning strikes and internally generated electrical transients.
Features include pre-wired pigtail conductors to streamline installation. Features internal copper bus conduction path to minimize system impedances, reducing clamping voltage and increasing reliability. A 5 year warranty is also included with this unit. Dry contacts are optional. |
Current Technology Diagnostic Tools
|
Current Technology offers portable diagnostic test sets. These can be used for initial start up testing or testing products that have been installed for years. SPD devices that have been installed incorrectly can result in a reduced lifecycle or complete device failure.
The MasterTEST surge suppression diagnostic tool monitors neutral-to-ground voltage and current on the easy hand held tester. It also senses percentage of protection available. The DTS-2 diagnostic test set allows for real-time testing to identify potential problems before protected loads are affected. It also provides establishment of benchmark clamping voltages for future comparisons. |
Current Technology Monitoring Tools
|
Select 2, Select Compact, TransGuard and Panelboard extension products all offer integrated monitoring solutions.
Base monitoring comes equipped with phase protection status indicator lights. A more advanced monitoring system called MasterMIND is also available. It features real-time product performance data and distribution system power quality. It can also be remote-mounted and operates via touch-pad controls. |
Current Technology LoadGuard Surge Suppression SPD
|
The LoadGuard MSU product protects from damaging electrical transients, high-energy disturbances, and high-frequency noise. It has a rugged, nonmetallic enclosure with the industry’s best surge current rating.
The LoadGuard MSU is engineered for hard-wired installation within or adjacent to electrical loads such as robotics, process automation systems, motors, HVAC systems, pumps, heaters, programmable logic controllers and other point-of-use applications. LoadGuard has two models available with ratings of 45kA or 65kA. |
Current Technology Electronic Grade PanelBoard Extensions
|
Electronic Grade Panelboard Extensions are designed for easy installation to retrofit and upgrade existing electric panelboards. It extends the lifecycle of the product by reducing equipment degrading and high-frequency line noise and transients.
Its space saving design fits within a standard 6 inch wall and the removable end plates allow it to be installed above or below the panelboards. |
Current Technology High Performance Interconnect System (HPI)
|
The High Performance Interconnect System (HPI) surge protection device connection system maximizes the SPD performance by allowing the installer to increase the cable length up to 4 times longer than using off the shelf cable. It reduces installation time with a pre-manufactured SPD termination.
It also improves installation quality and increases installation location options. The HPI connection system improves Surge Suppression Device performance. |
Current Technology CurrentGuard Compact Surge Suppression SPD
|
CurrentGuard Compact is a Type 1 SPD per UL 1449 3rd Edition standards and suitable for use in Type 1 or Type 2 SPD applications.
Innovative Z-path systems ensures equal current sharing, increased reliability, and maximum performance. Individually fused MOVs provide superior protection and continuous operation. The 200kAIC short circuit current rating allows direct bus connection without the need of an upstream over-current protection device. This system includes best-in-class UL 1283 enhanced EMI/RFI filter and all modes of protection (L-N, L-G, N-G & L-L). There is a flush-mounting kit available for in-wall recess panel applications. It is DTS-2 compatible for “pro-active” testing. The ultra compact steel NEMA 4 enclosure makes installation flexible. This products comes with a standard 10 year warranty. |
Current Technology CurrentGuard Plus Surge Protection Device SPD
|
The CurrentGuard Plus is listed to UL 1449 3rd Edition for Type 1 and Type 2 SPD applications. The innovative Z-path system ensures equal current sharing for increased reliability and maximum performance. Individually fused MOVs provide superior protection and continuous operation. The 200kAIC short circuit current rating allows direct bus connection without the need of an upstream over-current protection device.
The CurrentGuard Plus includes best-in-class UL 1283 enhanced EMI/RFI filter with all modes of protection (L-N, L-G, N-G, and L-L). This system comes standard with form C contacts, audible alarm with a silence button, and a surge event counter. The CurrentGuard Plus is DTS-2 compatible for “pro-active” testing. The ultra compact steel NEMA 4 enclosure makes installation flexible. This product comes with a standard 15 year warranty. |
